“Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. Before they came to the marriage bed, Joseph discovered she was pregnant. (It was by the Holy Spirit, but he didn’t know that.) Joseph, chagrined but noble, determined to take care things quietly so Mary would not be disgraced.” – Matthew 1:18-19 – The Message

Let us not forget about Joseph when pondering the Christmas story. This part of the story is significant! When God chose a young lady to carry His Son, He also had to look at who her spouse would be; after all, this man would be the “head” of the household and the spiritual leader to the boy Jesus.

God found Joseph to be a loving man who was very mature spiritually. When Joseph discovered Mary was pregnant he had every right to make a public spectacle of her; as a matter of fact, under Jewish Law, he could have had her put to death. But, he didn’t. Joseph chose instead to “cover” her and handle things quietly so she would not be shamed. . (If you really read the story well you will see that Joseph had not yet been visited by the angel. There had been no divine revelation to him at the moment he found out of Mary’s pregnancy. She had told him herself. The angelic visitation came later as he pondered what to do with her.)

The Bible says “love covers”. The person who does this is considered by God to be a person of much character. Would you be able to be a “Joseph” to others in your life? Are you willing to “cover” over others indiscretions (or seeming indiscretions) even if it means your reputation is at stake? Well……..Joseph did and he got the job of “Daddy” to the King of Glory!
