It seems that the ‘American Dream’ has lied to people and led them to believe that the way to true happiness is with ‘stuff’. The more the better. The more the happier. What the ‘American Dream’ has failed to tell them, however, is that chasing all this ‘stuff’ dominates their time and energy and robs them of ‘things’ that really matter: relationships with God, relationships with family, and relationships with friends.
There is a song that we sing in church that goes like this, “I wouldn’t trade You for silver and gold; I wouldn’t trade You for riches untold; You are, You are my everything.” The platitude sounds nice but is it really true. I fear many have indeed traded God for riches, for things, for success. The almighty dollar keeps them away from church activities and prevents them from having time to indulge in God’s work. Many have traded God for trouble and then wonder why their lives lay in ruin.
Friends, God’s word is clear that chasing “stuff” never satisfies. What good is all the “stuff” when it is accompanied with turmoil? What good is all the “stuff” when it is accompanied by “hate” and dissension? Truly it is better to have peace with God and little material possessions accompanied by love and joy rather than to have the whole world accompanied with strife and depression. The choice is yours! What are you going after?
